The Gold Cup
As I am sure you can imagine, there are a lot of trends for the Gold Cup. Â The majority of winners are aged between 4 and 6 years old, have won a 2 mile or longer race and finished in the top 3 last time out.
I haven’t applied these trends strictly because there are a couple of runners who look like they may have potential that would be removed. However this has managed to give us 7 non-contenders.
A P O’Brien and PC Boudot have got a good strike rate at Ascot and so we need to mark Brigantin and Fame And Glory as potential contenders. Hayley Turner specializes over the distance and so The Betchworth Kid must also be considered.
Askar Tau, Opinion Poll and Fictional Account are unlikely to have the speed in this race to come out on top and so are removed leaving us with Blue Bajan, Fame And Glory, Holberg, The Betchworth Kid and Brigantin.
From these Blue Bajan looks to be the strongest with Fame And Glory and Holberg as potential threats.
I would suggest an each-way bet on Blue Bajan with a place bet on Holberg and Fame And Glory.

Difficult but for me Brigatin and Duncan.
From a trends perspective Fame And Glory ticks all the boxes and in my opinion is a worthy favourite. Of course, the value may lie elsewhere in the field, but I couldn’t pick one with better claims on the race than F&G. Cheers, Paul
Brigatin was one that I removed with a bit wariness. It is certainly going to be a tough race.
I’ve been going with Hannon/Hughes so far for level stakes, so my pick is Chain Lightning. Not the most fancied by any means but Hughes has worked out the valleys and hills of Ascot, the dips and the gradients, better than anyone bar Dettori. I also like the look of Matt Bisogno’s picks, Blue Bajan and Fictional Account. Matt knows his onions.
For me the class horse of the race is the Aiden O’Brien horse Fame and Glory. He won’t mind the extra cut in the ground today but whether he can see out 2m 4f is to be seen. I’ll still have a play and maybe green up during the race.
I like Duncan too but like Fame and Glory has stamina doubts.
Holberg ran close behind So you Think in the Melbourne Cup, has winning course form at 2m and is my EW selection.
I’ll probably have a smaller win & place bet on Duncan, as I’d kick myself if he won…
Good luck whoever you are on.
Eamon
I wasn’t sure about Fictional Account, having said that it will probably steam in now, because based on the last year of races the speed concerned me in comparison to the other runners over this distance.
TASTAHIL- Highly rated and has run over 2m.2f regularly and has been fancied each time.
Same concerns as me with Fame And Glory Eamon, that was why I went for a place on him.
i think fame and glory hes the class act
Fame And Glory it was with a superb run. Very disappointed in Blue Bajan’s performance.
