The flat horse racing season has got off to a barnburner of a start. The QIPCO Guineas Festival at Newmarket jump-started the flat horse racing season at the beginning of May. Already, fans are gearing up for the biggest event of the summer – Royal Ascot.
The annual summer flat racing event will take place from June 15th to June 19th with five days of exciting flat racing. Horse racing bettors are gearing-up for the event. Leading sports’ bookies are also preparing for it.

Wordsworth
Three-year-old Wordsworth is trained by A.P. O’Brien, and goes into Royal Ascot having raced just twice previously. His career began at Curragh with a second-place finish, losing out to High Definition. After a 238-day break, Wordsworth returned to win at Curragh, outrunning the pack. Going into the Epsom Derby on June 5, Wordsworth is 16/1 to win in the run-up to Royal Ascot.
Indigo Girl
According to trainer John Gosden, Indigo Girl “wintered well” and should be a top contender this season on flat racecourses. Indigo Girl is yet to run in 2021, after racing three times last year. A first-place finish at Yarmouth was followed by a win at Doncaster. Indigo Girl kept the good times rolling at Newmarket, with a second-place finish in the Fillies’ Mile. The three-year-old is one to watch at Royal Ascot thanks to those excellent performances last season.
Lucky Vega
Compared to the two previous horses on this list, Lucky Vega has raced in more events, giving us an idea of what we may be able to expect at Royal Ascot. Lucky Vega has tallied two wins in six career races. Those wins came in 2020 at Naas and Curragh. The Mrs.John Harrington-trained horse has already run once in 2021, finishing third at the QIPCO 2000 Guineas Stakes.
In Swoop
Trained by F-H Graffard, In Swoop heads to Royal Ascot having recently run at Longchamp. The four-year-old finished second in the Prix Lord Seymour. It was the third consecutive race in which In Swoop finished second. In Swoop won his debut race at Lyon Parilly in 2020, the Prix Louis Saulnier, and could surprise a few onlookers at Royal Ascot. Jockey Ronan Thomas is likely to be in the saddle. He has ridden In Swoop in the horse’s last four races.
Palace Pier
Palace Pier won the St James’s Palace Stakes at the 2020 edition of Royal Ascot. The horse will be out to perform well again in Berkshire this year. Another John Gosden-trained horse, Palace Pier is coming-off of an April win at Sandown in the Bet365 Mile. Palace Pier has won six of his seven career starts. While the horse may not be an “underdog”, it is certainly one to keep tabs on ahead of race-day.
