Pepite Rose on Repeat Mission at Newbury

Today, we are looking for better luck having watched the well in Catching On fall last Saturday in the Midlands Grand National. At least this weekend we are siding with a very good jumper in Pepite Rose (touch wood!)

Pepite Rose is a worthy favourite loving Newbury with 3 wins from 4 chasing starts including winning this same race last year. I expected her to be shorter than 4/1 back on good ground and the same handicap mark of 145 as when winning last years’ renewal. We can forgive her a slightly below average run last time out as the ground was too soft and it’s well known she likes good to soft ground or better to perform near her best. Aidan Coleman rides and knows this mare very well having rode her to win seven times.

At Doncaster two runs ago Pepite Rose ran a big race when beaten by just 1 ½ lengths behind Highland Retreat and that was off a mark of 150! The handicapper has dropped her 5lbs since to 145 and I can see no reason why she cannot go and win today’s race. The opposition is led by O’Maonlai who has shot up 15lbs following a ruthless win three weeks ago at Newbury. He is a big horse and I always had him marked down with a preference for winter ground soft or heavy. The going today will count against him if remaining good and the same counts for Grey Gold who likes a good dig in the ground.

Rebel Rebellion is in great form but looks handicapped to the hilt even with Jack Sherwood claiming 5lbs. That leaves Persian Snow who is a horse I’ve backed in the past and can run very good or very poorly on any given day. He arrives here fresh off a break but is not a horse I want to back again having been let down more than once in the past. All in all if Pepite Rose runs her race and jumps well she looks a great each way bet to nothing.
