Catching On Looks the Part
The Tony McCoy farewell continues on to Uttoxeter Racecourse today and he has a cracking chance of landing the Midlands National aboard Catching On.
Catching On won as easily as any horse this year when cruising around Exeter to land the Devon National. That race was over 3m61/2f furlongs on heavy so the extra couple of furlongs here on soft ground will be well within his stamina range. The handicapper has raised him a full 13lbs for that victory but he gets to race today off 130 carrying a mandatory penalty. That means that Catching On is at least 7lbs well in today and probably more considering how easy he won last time out.
Tony McCoy was rumoured to be riding Shotgun Paddy in this race earlier in the week and it is significant that he takes over on Catching On from Wayne Hutchinson. Tony won the Midlands National on Synchronized back in 2010. This stamina stretching marathon is usually won by a horse carrying a lightweight and carrying 10-9 leaves Catching on four from the bottom of this handicap.
Catching On has just had the four chasing starts winning his last two and the penny has dropped with him jumping much better than previously. So long as he gets into a nice even rhythm he will take a heck of a lot of beating. It’s not often we lump on a favourite but this horse deserves to be head of the market and is the most likely winner.
